How Do I Know if It’s an Emergency?

Many dental emergencies are quite obvious, but sometimes it’s hard to know if you need immediate emergency care. Here are some common situations where we would want to see you for same-day dentistry:

  • Constant dental pain or a toothache: If you have severe pain, it may be because your tooth is infected. This can cause pain, tenderness, and swelling. It’s important to treat a dental infection as soon as possible in order to keep it from spreading to other teeth. In most cases, root canal therapy will eliminate the infection and preserve your tooth.
  • A broken or lost restoration: If you find yourself with an old filling or crown that has broken or fallen out, even if it is not causing pain, it will need to be repaired or replaced in order to protect your tooth from further damage or an extraction.
  • A tooth that has been knocked out: This emergency requires immediate attention in order to get the best results when treating your tooth. Try to keep your tooth in your mouth or place it back in its socket until you can get to your Aurora dentist. You can also use milk to transport it safely. Remember, the quicker you can get to Gateway Dental, the better chance we have of saving your tooth.
  • A broken or chipped tooth: When your tooth is broken, it may be painful or embarrassing. Gather the pieces and contact our office right away. If you have a smaller chip, you might not need immediate attention, but your tooth should be smoothed in order to avoid irritation or injury to your other teeth.
